digital sketches

Originally this blog was only going to be for my traditional work, but I decided I would make it about all my work in general. Therefore, here are some digital sketches. Nothing new and obviously nothing finished, just sketches to layout color palette, composition, light direction, and just plain ideas. Some are looser than others, but hopefully the idea is there.....hopefully

old school

I just got back from Christmas vacation with my wife in my hometown, Baltimore, MD. Since I unfortunately only make it back home once or twice a year, sometimes I like to go through my old work. This time around I found a few pieces I had completely forgotten about that I actually like for one reason or another. Here are 2 from 2002. They are charcoal and acrylic wash, roughly 20x27" on Strathmore drawing paper.

some sketchbook stuff

I thought I would post some pages from my most recent sketchbook, since I haven't had a chance to finish my current painting the last couple weeks. Hopefully next week it will be done before I leave for home back east. Graphite, charcoal, marker, watercolor, and a bit of gouache.

drive home

Here is a new painting I just finished today. Its from a photo I took on the drive home from Nevada last year. I pulled over on the side of the road and took the picture from the car because I loved that bright little puff of cloud against all the dark ones. Luckily a truck didn't hit us either...oil on panel, 18"x10"

snowy

I was watching the film Baraka tonight while I was getting ready to start painting and about 3 shots in, there was a great pan up the side of this mountain. The composition of that shot inspired this painting. For anyone who hasn't seen it, Baraka is one of the finest films I have ever seen. Every frame is beautifully composed, and the imagery is astounding. This is another one in the sketchbook..
